No alocução de abertura da Conferência de Berkshire sobre a História das Mulheres, adiantada na Universidade de Connecticut, Storrs, em junho de 2002, Joan Wallach Scott conjetura sobre as análises feministas do poder. Logo ela as aproxima, numa interpretação crítica, à crise desencadeada pela guerra contra o terrorismo, à história das mulheres, e ao gênero global e conhecimento local, sendo o último o tópico da conferência. Com o conceito de repercussões –considerado neste caso como ecos de acontecimentos, teorias, estratégias, etc, que viajam no espaço e no tempo, produzindo efeitos– a autora unifica as suas reflexões a propósito de temas bem diferentes.
